Q6 : What is splint therapy?
The status of the bite, lower jaw position and TMJs need to be assessed as a diagnostic step prior to tooth movement in some patients. There are variations, but most patients make the upper and lower teeth meet by unconsciously adjusting the TMJ with force. Once the TMJs are stabilized in their ideal positions, magnitude of displacement in lower jaw and the discrepancy in the engagement of upper and lower teeth actually become clear.
Even among children, there are cases with severe displacement of TMJ and change in the shape of bony joint structure due to resorption. Dislocation of discs at TMJs is also unexpectedly common. In such cases, it is crucial to check using splint therapy if teeth can be immediately moved by orthodontic treatment without any consequences.
